Purpose
This role is responsible for supporting the middle office function within Pacific Blue. The main purpose of the role is to provide the analytical skills necessary to ensure adherence to the Energy Markets Trading Policy, as well as assisting with the evaluation of contracting strategies and identification and assessment of portfolio benefits and opportunities.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
This role is responsible for but not limited to the following accountabilities. Accountabilities may change at any time to suit business needs.
- Manage risk models & systems to provide timely analysis of risk metrics.
- Develop and regularly review mass market load forecast.
- Support the review and validation of C&I load forecasts.
- Provision of periodic reporting on market risk exposures and compliance with the relevant policies.
- Assist on the development/improvement of risk metrics for electricity and gas.
- Ensure the ongoing operation of the Energy Trading & Risk Management system, including data entry, transaction validation and position reporting.
- Ensure adherence to the Energy Markets Trading Policy and other risk management polices & procedures as required.
- Assist with matters related to the EMC (Energy Markets Committee) meetings and reports.
- Monitor and control trader authority and reconcile that authority with appropriate policies & procedures.
- Perform Mark to Market calculations of deals and support middle office function on AEMO and counterparties credit support/risk related activities
- Provide analytical support and input into revenue contracting and risk management strategies
- Foster a cooperative error-resolution effort between front, middle and back offices
- Ensure that the Company’s compliance obligations are actively maintained, managed and kept up-to-date with particular focus on the compliance obligations allocated to the position title as identified in the Company’s Register of Compliance Obligations (as set out in the Compliance Procedure and as amended from time to time).
Challenges
- Provide timely and correct analysis and reporting on market risk metrics on a growing business within a fast-changing electricity and gas markets.
- Raise the middle office function profile within the business by properly balancing risk and value extraction from the energy market transactions.
- Build rapport with Retail, Front and Back Office personnel in order to ensure a compliant and efficient operation within the electricity and gas markets.

- Risk measures and reports are calculated correctly and are easy to understand.
- Provision of timely and accurate portfolio management risk analysis associated with the operating portfolio, retail position, new projects and contracting strategies across the full energy value chain.
- Reporting of risks and policy compliance on a timely basis.
- The Energy Trading & Risk Management System is operating effectively and being used to its full potential.
- Favourable feedback from key stakeholders on quality of presentations, reports and papers, as well as how meetings and reviews are handled.

Knowledge, experience (including qualification) and skill
Knowledge and experience:
- Tertiary qualifications in a relevant Financial, Mathematics, Risk Management, Commercial or Engineering discipline.
- Demonstrated experience working with large datasets using SQL, Python or R for statistical/analytical purposes.
- An understanding of energy trading risk management within wholesale and retail markets is advantageous, as would an understanding of renewable energy generation, electricity and gas retail operations and the general electricity and gas industry.
- 2-3 years electricity market experience is preferable.
Skills:
- Excellent Quantitative analysis skills.
- High level of resourcefulness and problem solving.
- Strong modelling skills and programming capability (e.g. VBA, Python, R) as well as database skills (SQL).
- Experience in financial modelling within the Australian electricity market is preferable.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and influence stakeholders across areas.
- Excellent planning and organisation skills, with the ability to tightly manage and timely deliver multiple projects of varying priority and difficulty.
- Ability to work in a close team environment, facilitate group discussions and share information.
