Purpose                                     

This permanent role is responsible for the middle office function within Pacific Blue, ensuring adherence to the Energy Markets Trading Policy.

The purpose of the role is to raise market risk awareness by providing support and guidance on the assessment and management of earnings volatility as well as providing analytical support on contracting strategies and portfolio optimisation opportunities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities The major responsibilities of the position, including the expected outcomes, standard and timeframes. i.e. the what and the how.

  • Management of the Middle Office as a key risk management and assurance function;
  • Develop and maintain an effective internal control environment for Pacific Blue’s energy trading activities including key policies and procedures
  • Management of Risk System (SimE) to support Pacific Blue’s commercial and retail activities
  • Primary interface to Commercial on setting transfer pricing and formulating hedge strategies
  • Provision of thought leadership to progress specific revenue management opportunities, alternative commercial routes to market and hedging products;
  • Provide expert advice on regulatory and energy policy matters;
  • Develop and manage risk models & systems to provide timely analysis of risk metrics, including earnings at risk, for decision making and reporting;
  • Develop, maintain and oversee adherence to the Energy Markets Trading Policy and other risk management polices & procedures as required;
  • Manage the agenda, papers and inputs for the EMC (Energy Markets Committee);
  • Manage the surrendering process for mandated green certificates and the communication with the different regulators in this matter.
  • Provision of periodic reporting on market risk exposures and compliance with the relevant policies;
  • Monitor and control trader authority and reconcile that authority with appropriate policies & procedures;
  • Manager of the Energy Trading & Risk Management system, including the validation of all transaction details and position reporting;
  • Monitor and control counterparty credit risk and credit support requirements from regulator and other counterparties;
  • Foster a cooperative error-resolution effort between front, middle and back offices;
  • Participate in the review of new products, commercial strategies, greenfield projects and mergers & acquisition opportunities, providing analytical support and input into revenue contracting and risk management strategies;
  • Review and validate all retail load forecasts for the Retail business;
  • Ensure that the Company’s compliance obligations are actively maintained, managed, and kept up to date with particular focus on the compliance obligations allocated to the position title as identified in the Company’s Register of Compliance Obligations (as set out in the Compliance Procedure and as amended from time to time).

Knowledge, experience (including qualification) and skill

Knowledge and experience:   

Detail the education and or special certification, training and work experience requirements for the position. This may also include the level of industry knowledge.

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant Financial, Mathematics, Risk Management or Commercial discipline;
  • 5 or more years electricity and gas market experience, including energy trading risk management within wholesale and retail markets;
  • Experience working with deal capture systems and data integration across different applications;
  • In-depth knowledge of energy market risks associated with:
      • renewable energy generation,
      • electricity and gas retail customer demand (CI, SME and RESI),
      • electricity and gas wholesale markets,
      • environmental product exposures and markets;
      • hedging frameworks for energy and environmental exposure
  • Experience with internal Steering Committee’s and/or Working Groups set up to deliver strategic and tactical projects and solutions to the business;
  • Experience developing small teams and transferring knowledge to others

Skills:              

  • Excellent quantitative analysis skills;
  • High level of resourcefulness and problem solving;
  • Strong modelling skills and programming capability (e.g. VBA, Matlab, @Risk, R, Phyton) as well as database skills (SQL);
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and influence stakeholders across areas;
  • Excellent planning and organisation skills, with the ability to tightly manage and timely deliver multiple projects of varying priority and difficulty;
